Waynesburg scored three times in the top of the 10th inning, and three pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the undefeated Raiders outlasted Yough 6-3 in a Class 3A Section 4 game Tuesday.
Yough (2-1, 2-4) had tied the score at 3-3 by pushing across a run in the sixth, but the Cougars would not score again.
In the 10th, Waynesburg’s Alex VanSickle hit a one-out double, his third two-bagger of the game. Derek Turcheck followed with a single and Ethan Kiger’s single drove in the go-ahead run. Nick Willard and C.J. Corwin drove in insurance runs with RBI singles.
VanSickle went 4-for-5 and Willard was 3-for-5. Cameron Russell had a double.
Corwin was the winning pitcher with three hitless innings of relief.
Canon-McMillan 7, Norwin 4
Nico Patragas hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the top of the ninth inning and Canon-McMillan defeated Norwin 7-4 in Class 6A Section 2.
Canon-McMillan pitcher Sebastian Shulsky and Tyson Mead blanked Norwin (2-1, 4-3) over the final seven innings, after Keegan Carr hit a two-run homer in the second to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.
Canon-Mac (2-2, 2-4) scored three times in the fourth and it remained tied until Patragas’ hit. He scored an insurance run on a balk.
The Big Macs’ Sam Meredith went 4-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run.
Avella 14, Jefferson-Morgan 3
Undefeated Avella scored eight runs in the top of the second inning and moved into sole possession of first place in Class A Section 1 with a 14-3 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in five innings.
Eight different players for Avella (3-0, 4-0) had at least one RBI and Isaiah Bradick and two relievers combined on a three-hitter. The Eagles took advantage of seven errors by J-M (0-3, 2-3).
Bradick and Brian Martos each doubled for Avella. J-M’s Brayden Ellsorth had a double.
Charleroi 3, Bentworth 0
Kaden Woods fired a one-hit shutout and struck out 14 as Charleroi defeated visiting Bentworth 3-0 in Class 2A Section 1.
Woods did not walk a batter and allowed only a double by John Scott.
Charleroi (2-1, 4-2), which swept the two-game series, had only five hits but scored single runs in three different innings. Jake Corrin doubled for the Cougars.
Peters Township 6, Trinity 5
Peters Township scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Trinity and a split of two-game series in Class 5A Section 2.
Peters Township (1-1, 3-4) trailed 5-1 entering the sixth. Two bases-loaded walks pulled the Indians to within 5-3, and Jackson Stocker’s two-run double tied the score. An RBI groundout by Zach Miner drove in the go-ahead run.
Charlie Taylor was the winning pitcher in relief and Matthew Scouvart pitched the seventh inning for a save.
Gibby Havanis hit a solo home run and Jonah Williamson added a three-run blast for Trinity (2-1, 3-2).
Washington 15, Frazier 0
Less than 24 hours after too many walks sent Wash High to defeat the Prexies bounced back with a stellar pitching performance, and their offense came through in a 15-0 thumping of host Frazier in a four-inning Class 2A Section 1 game.
Freshman Tyler Bainer fired a one-hitter with six strikeouts and teammate Ian Callan was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Callan had two doubles among his four hits. He was 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs and two RBI. Joseph Wilson had a double and three RBI, and Caleb Patton drove in three.
Chartiers-Houston 8, Beth-Center 1
Brady Gotfredson allowed one unearned run over five innings, Paul Williamson had three RBI and Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Beth-Center 8-1 to complete a two-game sweep of the Bulldogs in Class 2A Section 1.
After B-C (1-3, 3-4) had taken a 1-0 lead, Chartiers-Houston (2-0, 2-3) scored five times in the bottom of the third inning.
Gotfredson allowed only two hits but did walk five. He struck out five.
C-H’s Luke Camden had a double and Nathan Christy had two hits and a pair of RBI.
West Greene 8, Mapletown 1
Hayden Hamilton struck out 15 as West Greene defeated Mapletown 8-1 in Class A Section 1.
Darren Knight had three hits and drove in three runs for West Greene (1-2 in section).
Mapletown’s A.J. Vanata struck out 11 over five innings.
Bethel Park 7, South Fayette 3
Bethel Park scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning and defeated South Fayette 7-3 in an error-filled Class 5A Section 2 game.
The Black Hawks’ seventh included three singles, a walk, a hit batsman and an error. It enabled Bethel Park (3-0, 4-2-1) to overcome six errors of their own.
South Fayette (0-1, 1-1) was held to five hits.
