Ingredients

  • 1 package Hurst’s HamBeens 15 Bean Soup
  • 8 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 2 ham hocks, 1 to 1 ½ lbs.
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. Chili powder
  • 1 (14.5 oz.) can diced tomatoes
  • Juice from 1 small lemon

Instructions

  1. Sort beans and rinse thoroughly. Pour beans into a crock pot. Add the chicken broth, onion, garlic and the chili powder and stir. Place the ham hocks in the mixture. Cover and cook on high for about 4 hours, or until beans are tender.
  2. Remove the ham hocks and allow them to cool enough to handle. Remove the meat and put it back into the crock pot discarding the bone and the fat. Add the flavor packet that came with the beans, the diced tomatoes and the lemon juice. Stir and cook an additional 30 to 35 minutes longer.

Notes

If preferred, using the same method cook on low for 6 to 7 hours.

What size is an individual serving? Would it still be 1/2 cup like the bag indicates?

My husband and son love pinto beans, but i am not a fan sinyi grew up on them. I learned to make them spicy and they are ok, but not mypreferred meal. I saw The 15 bean soup on FB and decided to try the Cajun style. My husband commented that he wasn’t sure if he would like them since they contained black eye peas. I used a smoked turkey leg, andouille sausage and Rotel tomatoes and the guys loved them so much that I am making them again 3 weeks later.

Would it be possible to tell me the amount in the package of beans, how many cups?

Ok. I don’t have a ham bone. Can I use a ham steak instead. Or do i need to use a ham bone for the flavor

I use this same recipe! One thing I do differently I guess is save a hambone from a ham and I will cook that down first if I have one. Now that makes a difference too! You really get that deep ham flavor. Yours looks delicious and I agree about the cornbread too.
